Heathcote Botanical Gardens, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and a self-supporting membership organization. Membership fees provide a substantial part of the income that keeps the Garden alive and growing. The Garden relies on various sources of income, but at this time, Membership fees produce almost one-third of the Garden’s income.

Volunteer Work Days

Everyone is invited to participate regardless of experience. You must be over the age of 16 to volunteer on your own. Anyone under the age of 16 must always be supervised by a responsible adult over the age of 21.

Heathcote Botanical Gardens is what it is today due to the work of numerous, dedicated volunteers. Today, even with a growing staff, volunteers still play a vital role at the Gardens and are needed daily.

There are a variety of Volunteer Opportunities you can choose from depending on your availability, physical capabilities, skills and desired level of involvement.

Gardening Volunteers

Like to garden? Assist the gardener with weeding, watering, fertilizing, propagating & other tasks. No experience needed.

Events Volunteers

Want to volunteer but don’t have a lot of time? There are many jobs for volunteers during special events throughout the year too!

Children’s Docents

Trained docents have an opportunity to share their knowledge with visitors through educational programs and informal contacts. Work is mainly outdoors or in the Pioneer House or the Bonsai Pavilion.

Gift Shop Volunteers

Like the garden but prefer the air conditioning? Assist with gift shop sales, collect admissions, greet visitors & more!

Office Volunteers

Do you have office skills to share? Help with mailings, filing, answering phones, light data entry & more! No experience needed

Garden Ambassador

Spread the word about Heathcote. Recruit new volunteers, lead a tour, staff a table at a community event, speak to a group & more!

GARDEN OF LIGHTS VOLUNTEERS

Garden of Lights Sign up and Job Descriptions

Sign up to volunteer at Heathcote’s Gardens of Lights. Choose the button for the date you want to volunteer and it will take you directly to our online sign up. Then select the job you would prefer to do. Want to join us for more than one night? Of course you do because it’s so much fun! Just select another date after signing up for your first evening of volunteering and add yourself to the additional day(s). We can’t wait to welcome you here for the fun! Sharing the Garden of Lights experience with others through volunteering is a great way to spend an evening or two over the holidays.

Brief descriptions of many of the volunteer opportunities for Garden of Lights:

Admissions & Counters

Responsible for collecting cash or credit card admission fees at the two entrance gates to the event. Must be comfortable handling money, making change and processing credit card sales. Since Heathcote has transitioned to optional online tickets sales many admissions will just require verification of digital ticket.

Docent

Keep guests on the path and out of the lights and water, facilitate movement throughout the garden, answer questions and manage props in their area.

Gift Shop

Volunteers will be at the cash register to check out guests’ purchases or will be floating through the gift shop and assisting guests with purchases. Must be comfortable handling money and credit card transactions. Requires standing, walking and knowledge of gift shop procedures. Training is provided throughout the year and while volunteering.

Heathcote Bear

The Heathcote Bear is an opportunity for guests to take “selfie” photos. Be available to take guests’ photographs with their equipment if requested. Keep guests in an orderly line near the Bear as warranted by traffic volume. Must be comfortable using cameras and cell phones. Requires standing.

Parking

Volunteers will direct cars to appropriate parking areas and direct guests to the entrance of the event. Requires standing and walking. (Sketch of appropriate parking will be available.)

Floaters

Assist wherever needed such as filling in for no shows, relief of others for a break, etc. Standing and moving around is required.

Garden Ambassadors

Provide information for memberships, volunteers, classes, upcoming events, raffles etc.

Volunteer Sign in/Hospitality

Assist with volunteer sign-in and guide volunteers to their designated areas. Relieve volunteers and vendors for short breaks. Not responsible for taking money in vendor booths.

Heathcote will be free and open to the Community during Garden Fest. Last year’s garden festival drew a record crowd and a great mix of old and new vendors! We look forward to having vendor participation

Your participation is what makes the Spring Plant Sale and Fall Garden Festival great! If you are interested in participating, please fill out the attached form. We also invite you to place an ad in our event program.
