Celebrate America’s 250th Birthday with Red, White & Bonsai Week at Heathcote Botanical Gardens

Some moments in history are remembered through monuments, photographs, and treasured family stories. Others continue living and growing before our very eyes.

This July, Heathcote Botanical Gardens invites the community to celebrate America’s 250th Birthday in a truly unique way—with a week-long experience that combines history, nature, education, and family fun around one of the Gardens’ most remarkable living treasures.

From July 14–18, 2026, visitors can enjoy Red, White & Bonsai, a special celebration honoring America’s Semiquincentennial with reduced admission of just $2.50 throughout the week.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a bonsai admirer, a family searching for an educational summer adventure, or someone simply looking to spend a relaxing day surrounded by beautiful gardens, Red, White & Bonsai offers something memorable for every generation. Our James J. Smith Bonsai Gallery is a must see for all.

Meet a Living Piece of History

The centerpiece of the celebration is Heathcote Botanical Gardens’ extraordinary 220+ year-old bonsai.

Unlike museum artifacts protected behind glass, this remarkable tree is alive—its roots stretching back more than two centuries. It has quietly endured while generations witnessed the birth and growth of the United States.

Visitors will have the opportunity to experience this living masterpiece while exploring the special “When This Bonsai Was…” Timeline, an engaging exhibit that places American history alongside the incredible lifespan of the tree.

Imagine the events this bonsai has silently witnessed:

  • The early years of the American republic
  • Westward expansion
  • The Industrial Revolution
  • The invention of electricity
  • Two World Wars
  • The Space Age
  • The Digital Revolution

By connecting history to a living tree, visitors gain a unique perspective on time, resilience, and the enduring beauty of nature.

A Week of Celebration

Throughout the week, Heathcote Botanical Gardens will transform into a destination celebrating both American history and the art of bonsai.

Admission has been specially reduced to $2.50, making it one of the most affordable family outings on Florida’s Treasure Coast.

Guests are encouraged to stroll through the gardens, explore the nationally recognized bonsai collection, photograph patriotic displays, and enjoy peaceful moments beneath towering trees and colorful blooms.

Every visit and membership supports Heathcote Botanical Gardens’ mission of preserving horticultural beauty while inspiring future generations through education and conservation.

Special Event: America’s Next 250 Years

On Wednesday, July 15, from 6:00–7:00 p.m., Heathcote Botanical Gardens invites the community to a free evening ceremony celebrating both heritage and hope.

During this special event, the Gardens will dedicate a beautiful Cypress Bonsai whose origins trace back to the historic Adams Ranch.

The ceremony symbolizes the passing of history from one generation to the next while looking forward to America’s next 250 years.

Guests will learn about the tree’s Florida heritage, hear the story behind its journey to Heathcote, and witness a meaningful dedication recognizing resilience, stewardship, and community.

The event is free and open to everyone.

Family Fun During the Story Walk

On Friday, July 17, from 10:00 a.m. until noon, families are invited to participate in the free Red, White & Bonsai Story Walk.

Children will follow the adventures of three curious kittens searching for Heathcote’s famous 220-year-old bonsai while discovering important moments from American history along the way.

This interactive outdoor reading experience encourages children to:

  • Explore nature
  • Read together
  • Learn history
  • Discover botanical gardens
  • Enjoy quality family time

Designed for young readers while engaging visitors of every age, the Story Walk combines literacy, outdoor activity, and historical discovery into one memorable experience.

Why Bonsai Inspire Us

Although often appreciated for their beauty and artistry, bonsai also tell stories of patience.

Each branch reflects decades of careful cultivation.

Each root represents strength.

Each season marks another chapter.

Few symbols better represent the enduring spirit celebrated during America’s 250th Birthday than a living tree that has quietly grown through generations of change.

The ancient bonsai at Heathcote reminds us that while history is written by people, it is often witnessed by nature.
